Dr Rajinikanth Rajagopal

Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist

Dr Rajinikanth received his medical degree from Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), in India, before moving to the UK in 1999 and finally joining us in 2015 after his time. His training and work for the 15 years after included undergoing early Cardiology training and General Medicine training in London and Kent, before completing his Specialist Training in Cardiology in Manchester and Blackpool. After a period working as a Consultant in NHS, he left the UK to join us in 2015.

While specialising in complex coronary interventions including calcified lesions, left main stem stenting, bypass graft interventions, bifurcations and multi-vessel angioplasty, his focus falls mainly on improving long-term outcomes of angioplasty with the aid of intracoronary imaging (OCT and IVUS), physiology and the use of Drug Coated Balloons. His interest in actively participating researches has presented him the current position of Principal Investigator in an ongoing Global Randomised Controlled Trial on Drug Coated Balloons (DCB).

Being a key-opinion leader with contributions to advances and studied, Dr Rajinikanth recently initiated the Renal Denervation program at Glengeagles JPMC for the management of patients with drug-resistant hypertension. He also established a Pulmonary Thrombectomy service for the management of patients with life-threatening pulmonary embolism.

With a strong interest in medical teaching, holding a position as Adjunct Senior Assistant Professor at the Institute of Health Sciences, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), he is the lead for the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship program at Gleneagles JPMC, and has successfully trained a number of cardiologists from Brunei and overseas. He also serves as course director and is often invited to international meetings in the regions of Asia Pacific, Europe and USA.

Since Dr Rajinikanth is also active in researches and has conducted multi-centre studies, he holds numerous publications and reviews manuscripts for several international medical journals. However, outside of cardiology, the doctor also share interests in fusion music, attending different festivals, and getting to know a diverse culture in the joy of his travels abroad.
