Gleneagles JPMC continues to advance cardiac care in Brunei with the successful completion of a series of procedures within the past 2 months, marking significant “firsts” for the hospital and reinforcing its position as the nation’s leading cardiac centre.
Among these milestones is the successful performance of a minimally invasive valve surgery by Pg Dr Md Nadzir bin Pg Mohd Juanda, Deputy Director of Cardiac Surgery and Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Gleneagles JPMC.
Unlike traditional open-heart surgery, which requires opening of the chest and a surgical incision of about 20cm, this modern technique allows surgeons to repair or replace damaged heart valves through much smaller incisions, usually around 5 to 8 cm.
Using a high-definition endoscopic imaging system, surgeons can see the heart clearly and operate with greater precision, without needing to fully open the chest. This approach helps reduce pain after surgery, lowers the risk of infection, leaves smaller scars, and allows patients to recover faster and to return to their daily routines sooner.
Adding to the list of achievements, the hospital successfully conducted its first Extravascular Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (EV-ICD) case, led by Dr Sofian bin Dato Paduka Dr Haji Johar, Head of Electrophysiology and Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist. This next-generation device helps monitor heart rhythm and can deliver life-saving treatment if a dangerous irregular heartbeat occurs. Unlike traditional devices, it does not require wires to be placed inside the heart or blood vessels.
Instead, the device is placed just outside the heart, which helps reduce the risk of complications such as infection or damage to blood vessels, while still providing reliable protection when needed.
Further advancing the hospital’s electrophysiology capabilities, Dr Sofian also led the first VARIPULSE procedure at Gleneagles JPMC. This advanced technology is used to treat irregular heart rhythm, especially atrial fibrillation, by using controlled energy pulses to target problem areas in the heart. The system allows doctors to treat the condition more precisely while reducing the risk of affecting nearby healthy tissue, improving both safety and patient outcomes.
